Sopronkövesd

The village of Sopronkövesd is situated 20 km southeast of Sopron, on the western edge of the Kisalföld. Its surface waters are collected by the Füles stream. It is accessible by the main road 84 and the Sopron-Szombathely railway line. The buses of Zsira, Szombathely, Keszthely and Dunaújváros pass through the village. Sopronkövesd is situated at the bottom of the Alps, 20 km from Sopron, 31 km from Kőszeg and 45 km from Szombathely. It plays an important role in the economic life of the region, with a significant number of people employed here.
The settlement covers an area of 26.81 km2 and has 1,363 inhabitants.



Route planning

The first written record of the settlement dates back to 1326. In 1677 the Széchényi family became the landlords of the village. In 1806 Count Ferenc Széchényi had the church rebuilt. Agriculture has always been important in the life of the village, as the old written records tell of significant forests and good quality ploughs. To explore the countryside, there is a cycle path, which is integrally linked to the region's network of cycle paths.
 
Holy Trinity statue
It stands on the road to Agg hill and dates from 1864. The traditional depiction (the Father and the Son sitting side by side with the figure of the Holy Spirit above them) is surrounded by neo-Gothic decoration.
 
Hulcz Monument
Monument to János Hulcz, who died a heroic death in World War I, with the figure of Pièta. The inscription reads: 'To the glory of God, in honour of the sorrowful Virgin Mary, in memory of János Hulcz, who died a heroic death in the 1914-18 World War, serving with the 7th Hussars Regiment in the 7th Hussars Regiment in August 1917. He was killed in action on the Romanian battlefield near the town of Kimpolung in Bukovina on 12/12/1917 at the age of 20. He was raised by his brother József Hulcz and his family in 1934."
 
Heroes' Square
In the square in front of the parish there is a monument to the heroes of the village from World War I and II, and the Millennium Cross.
 
Chapel
The chapel is located on the vineyard near the village, on the Agg hill, at the so-called Kotecs, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the area up to the huge mirror of the Fertő, the hill is home to the good vines of Kövesd, and a stream flows at its foot. Its origins go back several centuries; it was built by the Dongó family in the first half of the 18th century. Over the centuries, the simple building, with its bell-shaped vaulted ceiling, has been altered several times and a small tower has been added to the façade. The mostly the recent renovations could be traced.
 
Roman Catholic Church
The present church of Sopronkövesd, which belonged to the Széchenyi family, was also a church in the 18th century. The church was rebuilt between 1782 and 1806. It is an early neoclassical church with 264 m2 of floor space, a single nave with a sanctuary, and an organ choir covered with a Czech glass vault.
